Aspen Elks

Aspen, Colorado

The Aspen Elks building was constructed in 1891 by early Aspen businessman Henry Webber and William Qualye (architect, builder, engineer). Originally called the Webber Block building, it was purchased by the Aspen National Bank in 1892. At various times, the building has also housed a drugstore, the Aspen Post Office, and a grocery store. The Aspen Elks Lodge #224 was established in 1891 and moved to the Webber Block in 1904; the Elks subsequently purchased the building in 1916.

The Elks building is a three-story commercial masonry structure with a basement located in the historic commercial core. It is constructed of brick with sandstone trim and has one-over-one window sash on the upper floors with cast iron and glazed storefronts. The façade is accented with carved Peach Blow sandstone capitals and specialty brick and carved stone. The south and west facades are topped with a decorative sheet metal cornice. A sheet metal dome with flagpole marks the corner.

Mills + Schnoering Architects (M+Sa) conducted a high reach survey to review and evaluate the exterior conditions of the building and prepared an exterior preservation plan. Restoration followed, and incorporated brick and stone repairs and repointing, sheet metal restoration, and exterior repainting.
